History

Construction on the school was finalized in 1971. The school is located on grounds donated by the Lapham family, carving off approximiately 46[1] acres of Waveny Park.

The donations of land came in two installments, one being 31 acres (130,000 m2) in 1964 and the second being 15 acres (61,000 m2) in 1966.

The school is at the intersection of Farm Rd and South Avenue, with the latter being a major thoroughfare into and out of downtown New Canaan. The school is setback from South Avenue by a 19-acre (77,000 m2) wetlands buffer which includes running trails.

Campus

The school recently completed a multi-year, $60+ million dollar renovation.[2] An additional $14 million was spent on asbestos abatement, a portion of which was reimbursed through the settlement of an asbestos related lawsuit.[3]

Athletics

New Canaan High School is part of the FCIAC athletic conference.[4]

The boys' lacrosse team last won the FCIAC and State Championship in 2003 (an undefeated 22-0 season). The team was coached by Mr. Howard Benedict.

The boys' swim team won the FCIAC championship in the 2006-2007 season, defeating Greenwich. This marked the first time since the 1950s where Greenwich High School did not win the FCIAC championship. The same year, New Canaan won Connecticut State Opens, becoming the first Class M school to win the state championship and the only team not in Class L or LL to do so.

New Canaan football has also meet recent success lately. The varsity team has won the past four class MM state championships, and has nineteen in total. They also lay claim to seven FCIAC Championships and twelve Turkey Bowl Championships.[5]
